In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to a complainant named Sojish of Nettoor, as per the state human rights commission's order. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued an order stating that the compensation should be deducted from the salary of the accused former SI of Panangad in three equal instalments. The commission's chairman, Justice JB Kosi, had mandated the compensation. Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was allegedly assaulted by the former Panangad SI, Vipin AB. The complaint alleges that Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without proper authorization after he was hospitalized. This led Sojish to file a complaint with the commission, which then ordered a case to be filed against the SI along with the payment of compensation. Despite a probe and departmental action resulting in a reprimand for the SI, no compensation was initially awarded. The government noted that the SI had the opportunity to present a defense before the commission's final decision but failed to do so. Consequently, the government intervened and directed the payment of Rs 25,000 to the complainant Sojish.
